MEMS Microphone Protective Mesh: Tune Resistance Before Open Area

A MEMS microphone protective mesh is usually drawn as a circle filled with holes and labeled by open area. That is not enough. The mesh sits inside an acoustic path with a case port, gasket, PCB opening and microphone port. Its resistance, alignment and seal influence the response of the complete path.

Knowles' SiSonic design guidance explains that acoustic mesh can protect a microphone from contamination while acting as resistance that affects frequency response. It also emphasizes a short, wide path and enough gasket-port allowance for positional tolerance. The mesh is part of the port, not a decorative grille.

Define the MEMS microphone protective mesh by acoustic function

Open area is only one input. Two meshes can share open-area percentage but differ in hole diameter, thickness, edge profile and flow resistance. Acoustic performance depends on how air moves through each opening and the cavities before and after the mesh.

Set a target resistance or frequency-response objective at assembly level. The metal supplier controls geometry and thickness, but the microphone OEM must validate the result with the selected microphone, gasket, housing and adhesive.

Port alignment needs a real tolerance stack

The case port, gasket hole, mesh active area, PCB opening and microphone inlet all have positional tolerance. If adhesive artwork locates the mesh while molded bosses locate the housing, explain how those coordinate systems relate.

Provide an active area larger than the worst-case projected path, but do not let adhesive squeeze or a support frame intrude. A generous pattern cannot compensate for a gasket that shifts or collapses during assembly.

Hole diameter, web width and thickness work together

Fine apertures can block larger particles and raise acoustic resistance, but leave narrow webs that must survive handling and lamination. A thicker sheet is stiffer but lengthens the aperture passage. A very thin sheet shortens the passage but can wrinkle during adhesive application or reel handling.

Photo etching is useful for dense repeated apertures and complex outer frames without a mechanical punching burr. Capability still depends on thickness, alloy and panel layout. A visually fine pattern is not proof of acoustic performance.

Edge profile and orientation can matter

Chemical etching often removes material from both sides, producing a wall that is not a perfect cylinder. If the mesh is asymmetrical or one-side etched for special geometry, orientation must be marked and controlled.

Laser-drilled holes can offer different wall geometry, but dense fields bring heat, recast and cycle-time tradeoffs. Electroformed mesh can reach extremely fine features and near-vertical walls, though tooling and handling economics differ. Woven mesh offers proven options but introduces wire intersections and needs a cut-and-retain method.

Contamination protection includes the perimeter

Particles can bypass a poorly sealed perimeter or enter during assembly. Define adhesive land, minimum overlap, cleanliness and packaging. Keep burrs, fibers and adhesive strings away from the port.

Hydrophobic or oleophobic function usually comes from a separate membrane or coating system, not automatically from an etched plate. Do not claim water protection from aperture size alone. Test the complete layered construction.

Flatness should match assembly

A small frame may not need aggressive global flatness if lamination holds it to a controlled surface. What matters is avoiding wrinkles, raised edges and local deformation across the active area. Define support condition and adhesive process during inspection.

For formed or domed meshes, evaluate whether forming changes pitch or damages the field. Etch first and form second only after strain and acoustic area have been reviewed.

Choose the process from scale and revision risk

Photo etching suits prototypes, device families and production programs where frame outline, port location or field may change. Digital artwork makes revisions easier than hard perforation tooling.

Stamping can be economical for high-volume stable designs if hole field, burr direction and tool wear are acceptable. Laser can suit lower hole counts. Electroforming or woven mesh may outperform etching when apertures must be substantially finer than sheet thickness or a specific acoustic material is already qualified.

Key takeaways: specify resistance or system response, not only open area; budget alignment across housing, gasket, mesh, PCB and microphone; protect the active area from adhesive; treat water protection as a layered-system requirement; and validate after the real assembly process.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a metal mesh protect against water?

A bare perforated plate may block debris but should not be assumed to provide water protection. Hydrophobic membranes, coatings, vent design and sealing must be tested as a complete system.

Is photo etching better than woven mesh?

It is different. Etching creates a one-piece pattern and frame. Woven mesh can deliver other resistance and filtration characteristics. Choose by acoustic target, particle requirement, assembly method and volume.

Should the drawing specify open area percentage?

Yes, but also define hole geometry, active-area boundary, thickness, material, port alignment and the condition after finish or lamination.

Sources and engineering context

Knowles, SiSonic Design Guide AN24, mechanical design considerations and acoustic mesh guidance; accessed October 9, 2026. The guide states that mesh affects microphone frequency response and can provide contamination protection while adding acoustic resistance. Final performance must be verified in the complete device.

Review the port stack before locking the pattern

A MEMS microphone protective mesh is ready for sourcing only when the port, gasket, adhesive and acoustic target are visible in the same review. Open area alone is not enough.

Metching's stainless steel etching service can support one-piece thin metal meshes and frames. Send the MEMS microphone protective mesh drawing, acoustic target, material, thickness, active area, gasket stack and annual quantity for manufacturability feedback.
